Worship
At St Peter's, the principal act of Sunday worship is the Eucharist.
The 9.15am said Eucharist uses the Scottish Liturgy 1929. This is taken from the Scottish 1929 Prayer Book. It is a
Scottish revision of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Although similar in language and structure to 1662, the liturgy
has a different Eucharistic prayer which is slightly longer and draws interestingly on Orthodox liturgies for its
inspiration. It is very like the liturgies of the Episcopal Church in the USA and the Anglican Church in South Africa.
The service is said, without hymns and lasts 35-40 minutes.
The 10.30am Sung Eucharist uses the Scottish Liturgy 1982. This is a modern language liturgy, not unlike the ASB
Rite A of the Church of England and is the order of service used most frequently. At this service, the Eucharist is sung
to the Addington setting and hymns from the New English Hymnal are generally used.
There is a midweek celebration of the Eucharist on Wednesday at 10am. Extra celebrations occur on saints days and
major festivals. Eucharistic vestments are normally worn and the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in Church. Any
baptised Christian of any denomination is very welcome to receive Communion at St Peter's.
From time to time, other forms of worship are used. At Christmas, there is a Service of Nine Lessons and Carols and a
Christingle service for children. On occasional Sunday evenings, Choral Evensong and Compline (a short Evening
service) are held and less frequently "Songs of Praise".
Music
Like many churches in the Anglican tradition, we use a variety of traditional and modern hymns. St Peter's is
fortunate to have a very fine organ and the services of a group of excellent organists led by Brian Adamson.
